Ireland’s Tidy Towns project is more than 50 years old, having first been established in 1958 under the auspices of Bord Fáilte (now Fáilte Ireland). Now in its 61st year and supported by the Department of Rural and Community Development, the project is self-proclaimed as “Ireland’s most well-known and popular local environmental initiative”.
Tidy Towns now has over 900 local committees across the country and in excess of 700 entrants per year. Suffice to say the Tidy Towns initiative has seen great growth and development from the 52 entrants in its inaugural year.
Newtownmountkennedy & District Tidy Towns Association has been in existence for 20 years and with its committee members and volunteers taking on tasks in the local community including voluntary clean-ups, planting, committee administration and engagement with community groups such as Newtown 2050 and local primary schools, it is with great pride that Inspex chose to sponsor it in its efforts this year.
The work of the Newtownmountkennedy Association does not operate in isolation. Each year the association creates a local Tidy Towns Calendar and organises family events for the wider community, such as the Easter Egg Hunt. Fostering a sense of community spirit is at their core and as part of this community engagement they provide flower baskets for local businesses located on the town’s Main Street, as well as creating a float for the town’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade.
Inspex is proud to sponsor the Newtownmountkennedy & District Tidy Towns Association and wishes all the committee’s team and volunteers the very best of luck in this year’s competition.
